Trio the Company
Trio Motion Technology is an engineering company that designs, manufactures, and distributes high quality motion control products worldwide. With thousands of axes installed, Trio products can be found in virtually every servo and stepper motor application requiring precise motion control that’s easy to implement.
Trio History
In 1987, Trio Motion Technology was founded by the entrepreneurial spirit of three talented engineers, Chris Backhouse, Roy Bamforth, and Kevin Gilliland. They saw the need for practical, powerful, yet easy-to-commission motion controllers for industrial automation. In 1988 Trio had released its first product the CSC-250-M drive-controller for dc servo motors.
 CSC-250-M Drive+Controller
The CSC Series had master-slave functionality to provide full interpolated motion capability. It was a break-through in integrating motion controls with the drive electronics into a single package. With expertise specifically in motion control and programming, Trio focused on a “controller-only” version of the CSC and in 1991 introduced the DAC-MX. The DAC-MX could program using TrioBASIC, and allowed customers to use any drive package with the Trio controller.
Trio quickly shifted to developing more capable systems by introducing the 68000-based MC1 multi-axis controllers in 1993. The MC1 product utilized an innovative Daughter Board approach to axis configurability. Trio’s customers could now control up to 4 axes in any combination of servo or stepper within a single programming platform.
Trio knew it had a winner in the MC1 product, but advancing machine designs demanded more. In 1994, Trio introduced the powerful and Trio’s first multi-tasking product – the MC2 Motion Coordinator. This new generation 12-axis system utilized DSP technology and had the speed and multi-tasking capability customers wanted to control multiple processes on one machine.

Many MC2 systems are still in operation today earning their keep. Continuing with the successful format of the MC2, Trio introduced in 1997 the MC200 Series with the MC204 and the more powerful MC216. The newer system gave customers more scalability in motion from 1 to 16 axes; and I/O to over (256) 24Vdc digital points using a CANbus network.
Trio maintains a dedicated in-house hardware and software design team to assure customers of quality products using cutting-edge technology. Trio is constantly pushing the envelope in technology and manufacturing to produce an unmatched line of Motion Coordinator controllers. This is evident by the size, capability, and value of the entire product line. Our products are available through a worldwide network of highly trained motion distributors. These distributors also carry complimentary products for use with Trio products, and can often provide complete system solutions.
A Recognized Expert in Motion
 MC302-K "Drive-In" Motion Coordinator
Because of Trio’s rich history of innovative motion products, Trio has become a source for other companies wishing to incorporate motion control technology into their products. Major Automation Company’s either use Trio standard products as their control line, or have worked with Trio to design custom products exclusively for them. Products like the MC302-K and MC302-L Controllers plug into Kollmorgen and LUST drive for a powerful motor-drivecontroller solution. In addition to hardware, Trio has developed powerful software tools for use with every controller. These tools provide all the features necessary for setup, programming, cam profile generation, and CAD 2D path conversion to ensure minimum development time.
